The Chair of the Local Government Commission (LGC), Treasurer Brad Briner, is applauding Ronda’s elected leaders for making the difficult decision to begin the process of dissolving the Town’s charter. This vote, taken Tuesday, is the first step in the process, and LGC officials say it is the responsible path forward.
“We appreciate Ronda leaders’ willingness to do what is best for their citizens and taxpayers,” said Briner. “These elected leaders took the Town’s financial challenges seriously and our staff is ready to work with them, Wilkes County and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition.”
During this month’s LGC meeting, Ronda officials were given a warning by members that they needed to either prove they could become financially viable or dissolve, whether voluntarily or involuntarily by the Commission itself.
There are still several steps that need to be taken before the charter is officially rescinded, but once it is, Ronda will become part of the unincorporated area of Wilkes County. Forty-two percent of North Carolinians currently live in unincorporated areas.
