North Carolina State Health Plan Adds Hello Heart as Benefit for Rural Members

The North Carolina State Health Plan is following through on its promise to not only provide support when members are in need, but also provide the needed prevention tools to help members stay healthy.  As part of these efforts, State Treasurer Brad Briner is announcing a new partnership targeting rural, more difficult to serve communities.  Hello Heart, the digital leader in preventive heart health, will now work to empower eligible Plan members to better understand and improve their heart health.

This program is available for up to 55,000 members that both work for selected organizations and are experiencing hypertension, high cholesterol, menopause or other heart disease risk factors. This benefit is now available and members are able to sign up for Hello Heart at no cost. They will then be equipped with a connected blood pressure monitor and app to track important metrics like blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and activity levels from the comfort of their homes. They will also receive tools to better adhere to medication routines, act on personalized health insights and securely share reports with their provider.

“We have a significant number of members who live in rural communities and struggle to get access to care,” said Thomas Friedman, Executive Administrator of the State Health Plan. “Our work with Hello Heart is not only about containing costs, but empowering our members to live healthier, happier lives. This is just one of several measures we will introduce to give members the tools they need to get and stay healthy.”

Heart disease remains the number one cause of death and disability in the United States, and medical costs for heart disease are expected to triple to $1.8 trillion by 2050. Tools like those offered by Hello Heart help prevent expensive, catastrophic events as well as improve the quality of life of their members.

“We are honored to support the heart health of members in North Carolina’s rural communities,” said Maayan Cohen, CEO and co-founder of Hello Heart. “By engaging members early and catching risk in time, we can help make preventable heart attacks and strokes a thing of the past.”

Dozens of federal, state and local government organizations now offer Hello Heart as a critical benefit to help prevent heart disease and reduce health care costs for their members and taxpayers.
