The North Carolina Retirement Systems (NCRS) is modernizing and improving the user experience. Beginning in early 2026, the ORBIT member portal will launch a streamlined, single sign-on (SSO) login powered by ID.me — a trusted digital identity platform used by federal and state agencies nationwide.
This upgrade falls in line with NCRS’s commitment to improve ORBIT’s login experience and strengthen account security. SSO eliminates the need for multiple passwords and knowledge-based questions. It is designed to simplify the login process for members and retirees, offering faster access, enhanced security and easier account management.
“We want our members to know their information is safe with us and that they can get to that information easily,” said Treasurer Brad Briner. “This transition modernizes and simplifies the process.”
The new SSO feature is expected to go live for NCRS in the first quarter of 2026. Many members may already have an ID.me account, as it is commonly used for accessing federal benefits and statements like Social Security.
“The streamlined process will lead to a better user experience for members of the Retirement Systems,” said Sam Watts, Executive Director of NCRS. “This enhancement was a top priority for our team, and I want to thank the Office of State Budget & Management for recognizing its importance and supporting our efforts on behalf of all public employees across North Carolina.”
The upgrade and further details will be introduced to members of the TSERS and LGERS Board of Trustees at their meeting on Thursday.
To ensure a smooth transition, members will be encouraged to create or verify their ID.me account ahead of time. Step-by-step instructions and more information will be available in November on our website, myNCRetirement.gov.
